Awesome label. Nice Merlot for the price.
How's this for a hilarious twist? The Independent Producers 2007 Merlot specifically calls out the 100-point rating system for wine, and the label clearly states its mission to rebel against said system. Take a guess at what was on the shelf in front of the bottle. That's right: a 90 point ranking from some snob magazine. For the sake of all that's ironic in the world, I needed to taste it.
For an $11 bottle of Merlot it certainly wasn't bad, but it was lacking in the velvety mouth feel I love so much about Merlot in general. The expected fruit flavors were in attendance, up-front and center; dark berry flavors with dried cherry and raisin overtones. The nose was very alcohol heavy, even after a patient decanting.
If you run across a bottle at your local purveyor, check for a sale tag. If it's on sale, buy. If not, inspect the remaining selection of value-priced Merlot before you hit the checkout.

A stacked BLT sammich with mayo and preferably thick-sliced double-smoked bacon. Hells yeah.
