Winemaker's Comments: 2004 Kenneth Volk Vineyards Carmody McKnight Vineyard Claret Other Red Wine
This wine is composed of 39% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot, and 28% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2004 was a short crop year at the Carmody McKnight Vineyard in Paso Robles. Well below average rainfall and late spring frost led to an extremely small harvest in 2004. Instead of harvesting the vineyard variety by variety, the decision was made to pick all the varietals together and co-ferment them in the same fermentor. The resulting wine is a true mariage of these classic Bordeaux varietals.

Robust, Fruity & Full of Legend
You really can't beat a wine with a great backstory, and this Claret has a humdinger of a story. First of all, Mr. Kenneth Volk chooses his grapes from among California's finest rather than managing his own land. The result? Typically a fantastic product of hand-selected varietals. This Claret takes the story one step further. In a particularly rough and dry year, the Carmody McKnight Vineyard in Paso was having a tough time and Volk decided to simply press the entire vineyard into the fermentation tanks rather than blend individual varietals. An interesting approach to winemaking to be sure, and definitely a rarity, the result is a very robust and fruity red wine that hits the palate with a vengeance but quickly diminishes to a mild, delicious and fruity end. Definite hints of cherry with floral overtones and a very distinct vanilla finish. Perhaps it was a longshot from the start, but Kenneth Volk certainly pulled out a clutch ending on this one.
