Winemaker's Comments: 2005 Babcock Winery & Vineyards Black Label Cuvee Syrah
I almost did not make this wine. Most of our 2005 Syrah gallonage that would have gone into it was sold, to my chagrin, in the bulk wine market. With the huge influx of Syrah into the markets, it has become increasingly difficult to sell very much of the stuff for more than $25 a bottle. My vision of the foreseeable future was, and still is at the moment, Australians unloading boat loads of Syrah on our shores. So, I decided to give this Black Label Cuvee a break... almost.
My answer was not just to make less, but to somehow make it interesting. But what is it that would be compelling to a guy who is already making Syrah from vineyards like Radical and Nook & Cranny? Well, for starters, a blend using these two vineyards would be interesting. Then, if we threw in some really enigmatic Syrah from a beautiful bench top section at Rancho Sisquoc, a section that because of its distinctiveness might very well find itself someday in the Terroir Exclusives program, that might be interesting. How was that wine enigmatic you ask? It smelled like tequila, like it came from Agave; all by itself, bizarre, but in a blend, very cool. Then, if we threw in our best lot from Estelle, the one that I refused to sell bulk (because if I did I knew I'd need psychiatrist) now that would really be a wine worth bottling.
There is not much of it. It's available at only two locations, the winery and East Beach Wines in Santa Barbara. Why East Beach? Because other than Costco, they have sold more of our Black Label Syrah than anyone else, and to them I could not say no. Why only two locations? Because as good as this wine is, two is all we are going to need.

Black Velvet
Black velvet...yes I please. Blackberry, raspberry and smoke all woven together to produce a well designed Syrah with a butter finish.
