Winemaker's Comments: 2005 Cakebread Cellars Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
The 2005 harvest was bountiful and cool. The wine shows aromas of grapefruit, citrus, and green apple with a wonderful flinty, mineral finish. We harvest the fruit at night to garner all the natural acid possible and to start the fermentation with cold fruit. Whole cluster pressing follows to limit skin contact and retain fruit character. This wine is a blend of 95% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Semillon.

Price vs. Quality?
Domestic wine prices continue to climb, the assumption being that American wine consumers are willing to make 'splurge' purchases consistently and often. There may be some truth to that, but one has to wonder when the bubble will burst... We're continuing to cast a suspect eye on the increasing number of wines creeping above the $25 range, and this bottle from Cakebread is no exception.
What will your $25+ get you? A truly solid Sav Blanc - banana, vanilla, strawberry and apple aromas/flavors accompanied by a very clean and satisfying finish.
Sounds good, right? Unfortunately (for Cakebread, not your pocketbook) we've said the same things about wines priced at half the Cakebread price. We'll leave it up to you, the intelligent consumer, to decide where the balance between price and quality tips. For this reviewer at least the price seems a tad high for the experience.
