Winemaker's Comments: 1991 Sterling Diamond Mountain Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Since 1982, we have recognized the uniqueness of these grapes by giving them their own vineyard-designated labelling. This wine is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for 24 months.
With distinctive fruit and berry characteristics, these mountain grapes create a flavorful wine with deep color and concentration that is appealing now and promises a great future.

Mystifyingly Enough - a Bummer!
We were awe struck when we attended a tasting at a small, local liquor store and saw a dusty, beat up bottle from 1991. Being the fans of Sterling that we are, we jumped at the opportunity to acquire what we thought was a 'diamond' in the rough.
After decanting we poured our glasses, took a whiff and a taste, and looked around the table only to see some disappointed faces. What went wrong? As Rumsfeld would say, it's 'unknowable'. We will continue to sing the praises of Sterling, but in this case the wine was harsh and chemically to the nose, almost bug-spray flavored on the tongue and it left a bitter and disappointing finish. I'm nearly positive the bottle was not corked so we'll just have to chalk it up as a miss among many quality bottles.
