Winemaker's Comments: 2004 Wente Arroyo Seco Merlot
In deep, gravelly soils, our Merlot vines attain a balance to produce fruit with concentrated flavors of currant, plum and spice. The ripe ruit notes in this wine are balanced with generous amounts of oak to develop additional complexity. This medium-bodied Merlot is a classic accompaniment with beef, pork, lamb and robust pasta dishes.

A taste of the good life
I gotta say the Wente name was a total mystery to me when we purchased this Merlot, but since my better half had a psychic connection with the bottle I had no choice but to close my eyes and sip. The results, you ask? Mighty fine, my friend. Fruity and mild while remaining bold and complex. Full of flavor with a melon aftertaste that's truly unique. Upon further research it appears the Wente family has a bit of Shangri-La going for itself in California. We're going to add the Wente estate to our list of must-visit wineries, and if the remainder of their offerings are anywhere near the quality of this Merlot we'll be glad we did.
