Winemaker's Comments: 2004 Jacobs Creek Riesling
The 2004 vintage will go down as a “Classic” year to produce the very best Riesling wines from Premium grape growing areas of South Australia. This excellent year was brought about by above average rains during the winter of 2004. Full soil moisture reserves at bud burst promoted strong early growth and good canopy development during spring. Mild and generally dry conditions during flowering ensured balanced yields of potentially high quality fruit. The summer months were ideal with cooler and dryer than average weather conditions. This was significant in providing an environment of low disease pressure and slow but progressive ripening. Equally March and April were dry and warm culminating in the harvest of ripe and fully flavoured Riesling grapes, the resultant base wines captured the pure essence and varietal intensity of this “classic” vintage.

Floating Cork Wine Review & Rating By Jeff O'Brien |

It reminded me of Christmas when I was 7 years old, and not only because I was throwing back the happy juice – the wine had such a strong plastic aroma that I felt like I was unwrapping a G.I. Joe figurine. To make sure it was the wine, I poured more into another glass with the same result. Does anyone else smell that, or was this just a bad bottle? Otherwise, the taste was true to smell with an additional quick finish of grapefruit. Drinkable, despite all that.
